Lawn Rakers & Scarifiers
The elements of the changing seasons can be brutal to your lawn. During the Summer, the grass can dry out and eventually die and during the Winter, all of the dead grass is forming layers underneath all that is frozen causing even more layers of thatch. Buying or renting lawn rakers & scarifiers can do much to prevent a lot of what ails your lawn.
Some amounts of thatch is good to have; usually about an inch deep. Dead grass, minerals and sediments are what makes up the thatch and too much can be a detriment and so raking, aerating and scarifying the lawn helps to blend it up and help the lawn breath so the grass can grow in beautifully and healthful. Most lawn rakers & scarifiers are available in electric and petrol models; electric being useful for those who do not have large lawns to contend with.
Most local hardware stores have lawn rakers & scarifiers available for rent or purchase and most often, they have home videos available to walk you through how to do the work and you can always hire a lawn maintenance team to do it for you. Usually, one good aeration at the top of Spring will get the lawn all the way through to the Winter. Aeration consists of poking holes a few inches apart all the way across the lawn, enabling air and water pockets to further hasten healthy growth.
Most lawn rakers & scarifiers can be purchased over the Internet or by simply traveling to the local hardware store to pick out exactly what you need. The machines are very helpful in planting new grass seeds; maintaining the seeds as they grow so as to prevent them dying before they get a good growing start. Watering the lawn on a weekly, sometimes daily basis will increase the beauty of the lawn by helping to prevent the build up of excess thatch during the warmer months and giving the lawn the ability to create a sort of thermal blanket to make it through the Winter months until it is time to do it all again.
